“FOLLOW YOUR BLISS”

Joe Campbell famously advised that bliss
Is to be followed as our guide, and this
Is mainly what I’ve done through all my days
Instead of taking work for what it pays.

But what is bliss: a shallow happiness,
A hedonist’s idea of success
That maximizes pleasure at all cost
And shuns those seas that may be tempest tossed?

No, rather, bliss is the beatitude
That comes when your heart’s calling is pursued,
The gratifying spiritual elation
Of rightly realizing your vocation.

How will you know if that is what you’ve done?
You’ll feel the Universe and you are one.
