THE SPIRITUAL ATHEIST’S CONFESSION

I am an atheist in that I can’t
Allow myself to be a sycophant
To some mysterious “deity” who rules
Presumably a universe of fools.

That concept of a god is dead to me;
I’d rather focus on humanity,
The grandest species yet to have evolved,
Whose aim is that all mysteries be resolved.

And yet, though godly fables we’ve all heard
Appear to rationality absurd,
There’s something inexplicable I feel
Persuading me that something more is real.

How is it that I can transcend my mind
And find solutions to which reason’s blind?
