DIVINATION

     That life exists and even consciousness
     And then the self-awareness to discern
     We are unique in our species’ success
     At recognizing how we grow and learn—

     All this amazes me, a mystery
     Beyond the ken of our intelligence
     It seems, except for those who claim to see
     Divinity through paranormal sense:

     In trance or ecstasy their reach of mind
     Extends to metaphysical domains
     Revealing how the Cosmos is designed
     And every earthly mystery explains.

         That one had come to such a consciousness
         Would be the mark of ultimate success.
