A HIGHER LAW

Should we not live more lightly on the Earth
And not consume a disproportioned share,
Converting this world’s bounty into dearth
For other creatures, taking more than’s fair?

Or may we rationalize away our greed,
Alleviate misplaced compassion’s pangs,
Asserting that the strongest should succeed,
Since “Nature’s Law” rewards the ruling gangs?

A higher law than Darwin’s proves more true,
For though fierce nature’s red in tooth and claw,
The fittest live because they fit into
A larger scheme inspiring greater awe.

The partnership of all lets most survive;
Cooperation is life’s highest drive.
