AN ATHEIST’S PROFESSION

Without religious dogma as my guide
Or “God” in whom to trust, hope and confide,
How do I make my way through these dark woods
Determining the should-nots from the shoulds?

By probing to the core of sacred lore,
Compiled by sages who have come before,
To the perennial philosophy—
Our underlying commonality.

For when each one of us can open to
The Source of Love, we know just what to do;
That fount of inner wisdom then reveals
What ritualized conformity conceals.

Now, if you say my “Source of Love” is “God,”
I might agree, but not one with a rod.
