BE STILL AND KNOW

Assuming I am free and may pursue
Whatever course I choose, and have the means
To realize my dreams, what should I do?
Which is the way my native genius leans?

That inner wisdom from my innate guide
Reveals itself when I serenely pray,
And what I seek it’s ready to provide,
Though not a mandate that I must obey.

I’m always free to exercise my will
And follow wayward impulse into night,
Yet wisdom ever beckons when I’m still
And shows me how to reckon things aright.

Be still, be still, be still, be still—and know,
For in that lighted clearing truth will show.
